Hair removal is a common task that men and women find themselves consumed with, often on a daily basis. Unwanted hair can certainly get in the way of how you feel about your appearance, but there are several options that extend the results that can be accomplished with shaving.

Waxing

After shaving and plucking, waxing is a practice enlisted by many people to remove larger areas of hair for weeks at a time. Though the results that can be achieved with waxing are better than shaving alone, they are not permanent.

Electrolysis

Electrolysis is a hair removal treatment that has been performed for many years in medical practices and med-spas. This method works on the principle of electrical energy. Using a very small needle, the practicing clinician pulses low-level electricity into the individual follicle into which the needle has been placed. With each pulse, the hair within the follicle is destroyed. Existing hairs in treated follicles fallout, leaving skin smooth and silky. The problem with electrolysis for hair removal is that follicles are treated individually, and up to two dozen treatments may be needed to achieve the desired result.

Laser hair reduction

The effectiveness of laser hair removal / reduction treatments really can’t be matched by any other method. In our offices near Potomac, we discuss the details of laser hair removal and explain why this treatment is better referred to as laser hair reduction.

Laser hair reduction relies on the power of laser energy rather than electric energy to destroy hairs. Aiming the laser device at the skin in the treatment area, your dermatologic clinician focuses on hundreds of hair follicles at a time. There is no invasion of hair follicles with a needle, just a pass over of our device and small snapping sensations as pulses of laser energy hit follicles.

Inside the hair follicle, laser energy is absorbed by melanin, or pigment, heating individual hairs to the point of destruction. The burning of melanin within hair follicles stops the production of hair temporarily. The hair affected by laser energy is that which is in the active growth cycle. In order to achieve lasting results, five to six treatment sessions will be scheduled with a few weeks in between.

There is a comfortable, effective way to get the smooth skin you want. Contact The Washington Dermatology Center to learn more about our laser hair reduction treatment.
