We achieve the best possible results using carefully chosen dermal fillers in our Rockville dermatology practice
When you catch a glimpse of your reflection, does it convey your level of energy and enthusiasm for life? The standard of living now, coupled with improvements in medical technology, allow us to live longer, more active, healthier lives. This does not mean, however, that time does not take a toll on our skin. Premature aging is still a common problem, often a development of not only age but environmental and nutritional pollutants, sun exposure, and stress.
A major factor in the look of aging skin is the loss of volume that occurs naturally with time. Thinning in the dermal tissues is coupled with a reduced amount of fatty tissue, which leaves the skin lacking the support it once had. As loosened skin begins to sag on cheekbones, jowls, and the chin, lines and wrinkles develop. For many years, surgical brow and facelifts were the only solution to loose, saggy skin. Today, Dr. Prussick helps patients achieve the best results using dermal fillers chosen precisely for their needs with the goal of achieving a “liquid facelift”. In our offices in Frederick and Rockville, patients benefit from careful planning and execution, as well as our selection of dermal fillers.
The evolution of dermal fillers
Dermal fillers first came onto the market in 1981. At this time, fillers were often formulated with bovine collagen. The results achieved with this early formulation were quite impressive, lasting 90 to 180 days. The range of use with bovine collagen, however, was somewhat limited, unsuccessful at treating certain conditions such as indented scars. Even more concerning was the potential for allergic response to animal-derived solutions. These risks and the need for an “allergy skin test” kept many people from obtaining treatment.
The benefits of hyaluronic acid discovered
The further developments of dermal filler treatment led to the discovery of the benefits of hyaluronic acid. This natural sugar compound is produced by our bodies to keep joints fully functional, the eyes lubricated, and the skin plump and hydrated. Because hyaluronic acid is a substance already found in the human body, it is readily accepted when injected into the skin, producing no allergic response.
As we age, our skin contains less of this valuable substance. Injecting hyaluronic acid fillers, such as Juvéderm, into the skin reduces fine lines, wrinkles, and folds by immediately plumping them while also working within the skin cells to promote ongoing improvements. Dermal fillers like Juvéderm create beautifully smooth texture in the skin that lasts several months and looks completely natural.
Aging cannot be stopped. The signs of premature aging, however, can be handled with gentle, precise treatment using dermal fillers best suited to your skin and particular needs.
