The aging process is not something we can escape. There are ways, however, that we can slow down the progression of aging. To keep your skin looking and feeling its best may take a few extra steps as you get older. Fret not, though, your dermatologist in the Kensington MD area has solutions for healthier, younger looking skin.

  • Learn how to be savvy when it comes to the sun. “Sun savvy” is a term we are hearing more and more, because it makes perfect sense. The more our skin is protected from harmful UV rays, the fewer effects will occur. In addition to minimizing the risk of skin cancer, sun savvy practices can prevent photoaging, or premature signs of aging due to sun damage. To be sun savvy means to:
    • Wear sunscreen every day. The greatest amount of protection comes from a broad spectrum sunscreen with minimum SPF 30 with zinc oxide to also block UVA rays. Heliocare, an oral sunblock, is also recommended. Sunscreens may change depending on your activity. For instance, the sunscreen you wear to the beach or pool should be water resistant, whereas the product you use every day may not need this characteristic.
    • Plan outdoor activities in the early morning, before 10am, or after 2pm.
    • When spending time outdoors, cover up as much as possible with protective clothing (long sleeves and pants) and a wide brimmed hat. Gloves are also beneficial if you are working in the garden or on an outdoor project. The skin around the eyes can be protected by wearing sunglasses.
  • Avoid the use of tanning beds. This method of browning the skin is no safer than tanning under peak sunlight and can, in fact, be more harmful. If a sunkissed glow is desired, choose spray tanning.
  • Use the right moisturizer for your skin. As the skin ages, it becomes dryer. Dry skin equals fine lines and wrinkles. Moisture is also needed on the lips and can be increased with a suitable lip balm.
  • Avoid smoking. The chemicals in tobacco smile affect the skin, leading to loss of firmness and poor texture.
  • Make healthy lifestyle choices. The foods we consume on a regular basis feed our skin from the inside out. The amount of sleep we get, as well, will play a role in the appearance of the skin.
