Your dermatologist develops a plan for acne treatment in Frederick that will minimize the risk of scarring

Acne is one of those things that we tend to associate with the teenage years, kind of like braces. The truth is, however, that one out of every five acne cases involves an adult patient. No matter your age, you are susceptible to the development of acne. At Washington Dermatology Center, your experienced dermatologist will develop a plan for acne treatment designed around your needs. Dr. Prussick has equipped his offices in Frederick and Rockville with proven products and technologies that aid in the treatment of existing acne and the prevention of scarring.

Why does acne occur?

Because acne most often affects teens, there has been an assumption that self-care, or the lack thereof, has something to do with breakouts. In reality, it is the fluctuations in hormone levels during the teen years that most predispose the teen to blackheads, whiteheads, and even cystic acne. As hormones rise and fall, the production of skin oils and waxy sebum is often increased. In stable amounts, these substances are good for the skin. When there is too much oil and sebum, there is an increased risk of pores getting clogged with a combination of these elements, dirt, and dead skin cells.

On the skin is also a certain amount of naturally-occurring bacteria. Because bacteria are living organisms of which some types can live without oxygen, clogged pores may also trap pathogens that cause irritation beneath the skin.

Why does some acne cause scarring?

As if acne itself were not bad enough, the acne sufferer must also worry about breakouts leaving permanent marks on the face in the way of scars. There is the risk of scarring when inflammatory acne, in which affected follicles rupture, sending bacteria-filled fluid into surrounding tissues, occurs. Sometimes, the subsequent scarring lasts only a short time. In other cases, scars may remain permanently.

Whether acne is inflammatory or not, it is important to protect the long term health of the skin by avoiding the urge to pop or pick pimples.

Acne care that gets results

There are a number of acne products available commercially. Not every person’s skin will respond well to commercial products. In order to banish an existing breakout and greatly reduce the risk of scarring, the most advantageous step is contacting an experienced dermatologist for personalized care.

There is no need to wait and see if acne will clear up with home care. Get results fast by visiting Washington Dermatology Center in Rockville or Frederick.
