Are you an ideal candidate for laser hair removal in the Ijamsville, MD area?

Shaving, plucking, waxing, and other methods of hair removal are very common. Many of us perform at least one of these activities on a daily basis, whether we would really like to or not. Laser hair removal, or reduction, is a service that many of our patients ask about. This type of treatment is designed to permanently reduce or even eliminate the growth of new hairs from various areas of the body.

Laser hair reduction treatments deliver focused laser light into hair follicles. This energy is absorbed by actively growing hairs, destroying them and affecting the hair follicle, as well. Laser hair reduction may be done to completely remove all existing hairs in an area of the body, or to limit the amount of hair growth in an area where hair is too thick. In either scenario, the best results are achieved through the completion of several treatments.

Treatment sessions are scheduled a few weeks apart so that hairs that are in the resting phase have time to enter the active growth phase, during which they will absorb laser energy. Although results may be seen after the first treatment, it is necessary to complete the entire series if permanent results are to be achieved. Ideal candidates for laser hair removal, or reduction, are willing and able to commit to their desire for permanent hair reduction or removal. We may also recommend that patients from Frederick, Rockville, and the Ijamsville areas consider touch-up treatments to extend the results of hair removal.

Who gets laser hair reduction

Dr. Prussick is an experienced dermatologist who has helped many of our patients achieve smoother, more supple skin through laser hair reduction treatments. Good candidates for this procedure are those who:

  • Want to reduce the amount of unwanted hair in one or more areas.
  • Have darker hair follicles than skin tone.
  • Understand what can be achieved with laser hair removal, and know that touch-up treatments may be necessary at some point.

One of the keys to success with laser hair reduction is the color of skin and the color of hair. Laser energy is absorbed by the pigment within hairs. This means the lighter the hair, the more difficult laser hair removal may be. Gray hair, in particular, will not respond to light energy and therefore cannot be removed with this type of treatment.

Common treatment areas.

Laser hair reduction can be successful at removing unwanted hair in a number of different areas, including the:

  • Underarms
  • Face
  • Back
  • Chest
  • Bikini area
  • Legs
