What is microneedling?
Microneedling has also been called skin needling or collagen induction therapy. Typically, areas of the face are the focus of microneedling treatments. The procedure has been used for decades to treat conditions such as fine lines, wrinkles, scars, or stretch marks. Recent advancements in technology have made the procedure gentler and more effective.
Microneedling utilizes sterile, fine tip needles in a cartridge. This cartridge is part of a motorized pen. The pen includes controls for speed and depth allowing the doctor to adjust the treatment for each patient. The needles pierce the skin triggering the production of collagen and elastin as the skin works to heal itself.
Benefits of microneedling
Microneedling treatments are similar to the effects of a Fraxel laser treatment in that trauma occurs to the upper layer of the dermis. However, the healing process with microneedling has advantages over laser therapy including the following:
- Collagen produced by microneedling therapy forms in a basket weave pattern which gives a natural, smooth appearance. Lasers produce linear scar-like collagen.
- Microneedling improves the quality of your skin. It can treat fine lines and wrinkles, skin tone and texture, lax skin, and scarring.
- Less downtime is needed with microneedling because the epidermis is left intact. This equates to faster healing and less chance of side effects.
- Can be used on all skin types as there is minimal risk of pigment changes
