Finding the right treatment for rosacea possible with help from your Frederick dermatologist

Rosacea is a skin condition that affects millions of people of all ages. Due to its similarity to acne, rosacea is often mistaken as such. The two conditions, however, are vastly different. Treating rosacea as acne is not likely to produce favorable results. In fact, mistreatment may worsen symptoms. To find the best treatment for rosacea, we work with our Frederick patients on an individual basis, letting symptoms guide our planning.

Symptom recognition

Facial redness is one of the most common signs of rosacea. People affected by this condition may seem as though they are blushing all the time, or may seem shy or easily embarrassed due to easy flushing. Rosacea actually has more to it than redness. The symptoms vary based on the classification of rosacea itself:

  • In Erythematotelangiectatic Rosacea, patients may notice visible vessels or spider veins on the face, redness, inflammation, and a rough skin texture. Skin may feel as though it is burning or stinging, as well.
  • In Papulopustular Rosacea, bumps and pimples may be a chronic problem. Plaques, which are areas of raised, red skin, may develop.
  • In Phymatous Rosacea, skin around the nose may become especially thick, to the point of causing deformity. This type of rosacea may affect women, though men are most often diagnosed with this type.

Finding the right treatment for you

Three in four people with rosacea say that they could feel a greater sense of self-esteem than they do, were it not for the chronic physical symptoms of their condition. Half of rosacea patients report avoiding social activities out of embarrassment. Your dermatologist, Dr. Prussick, with offices in Frederick and Rockville, can help you find ways to manage rosacea so that you can experience a better quality of life.

We take a team approach, collaborating with our patients who are managing rosacea, helping them recognize and avoid triggers that can irritate the skin. We also provide treatments to address each patient’s specific needs. This may include oral or topical medications, or IPL treatments performed in our office. Dr. Prussick will discuss the recommended options for treatment, as well as options for skin care and cosmetics for decreased irritation.

You can put your best face forward when rosacea is managed effectively. Contact Washington Dermatology Center for your consultation with experienced dermatologist, Dr. Ronald Prussick.
