Approximately 7.5 million people suffer from psoriasis. Psoriasis is an inflammatory disease of the immune system that affects the skin and joints. Due to the rapid growth of new skin cells, patients often suffer from red, itchy, or scaly skin. With locations in Frederick and Rockville, MD, Dr. Ronald Prussick of Washington Dermatology Center offers ultraviolet treatment for psoriasis.

What is ultraviolet treatment?

Light therapy or phototherapy exposes the patient to regular ultraviolet light while under medical supervision. Consistency is the key, as regular treatments provide the best results. There are various types of phototherapy. At Washington Dermatology Center, we use narrowband ultraviolet B (UVB).

UVB is present in natural sunlight. When it penetrates the skin, the light slows the growth of affected skin cells. Unlike broadband ultraviolet light, narrowband UVB releases a smaller range of ultraviolet light. Studies show that narrowband UVB is a faster, more effective treatment than broadband UVB.

What to expect

With any treatment or procedure, it is important to have realistic expectations and to understand that it may take time to get results. The skin may turn red or itch. If sensitivity occurs, the amount of UVB can be reduced during treatment. Reactions or flare ups usually resolve with consistent treatment.

UVB therapy is often performed a few times a week. Maintenance UVB treatments can be done to prolong periods of remission from psoriasis. It can be combined with other treatments to enhance your results. However, other side effects such as photosensitivity or burning may occur. Every patient is different. Your physician understands your skin, symptoms, and treatments. Dr. Prussick will create a customized treatment plan that suits your needs.
