Dr. Ron Prussick at Washington Dermatology Center, which serves the Bethesda area helps men and women with a complete range of treatments for their skin, hair, and nails. He knows that when patients do not look their best, it may affect their self-confidence, especially if they have certain skin conditions such as psoriasis.

Psoriasis is a chronic skin disorder that can affect everything from the skin to the joints. In fact, approximately one third of patients who have psoriasis also deal with inflamed joints. Joint pain may also be a symptom of psoriasis even with clear skin. Psoriasis can affect many areas of the body, including the skin and nails. It can develop on the scalp, palms of the hands, soles of the feet, and even the buttocks. There are many different types of psoriasis including guttate, inverse, vulgaris, pustular, and erythrodermic. A proper diagnosis is needed in order to start treatment to control the condition and help patients to look and feel their best. Most individuals with psoriasis develop it around the age of 30-40 years old, and the symptoms on the skin are present before the joint issues arise.

Dr. Ron Prussick is also asked by his patients about the cause of psoriasis. What causes this condition to develop? Psoriasis is a genetically inherited autoimmune disease which may also be affected by environmental factors. The triggers that cause it to suddenly appear are not well known but are being studied. Psoriasis is also associated with other autoimmune diseases such as chrohn’s disease and celiac disease.

Patients who are faced with psoriasis do have several treatment options available to them through the practice of the Washington Dermatology Center. Getting a proper diagnosis by Dr. Ron Prussick is the first step in learning about methods of controlling this chronic skin condition. He is on the medical board for the National Psoriasis Foundation and can use his knowledge and experience to help.
